If your website runs on WordPress or another popular open-source system then it is imperative that you keep your software and plugins up to date, otherwise your website will become vulnerable and run the risk of being hacked.
Updating software comes with own problems though and occasionally a simple update will break features on your website, such as a contact form, which in turn would lead to a loss of potential clients.

Open-source software, such as WordPress, is particularly vulnerable to malware. Being open source means the code if available for hackers to find weak points and write automated scripts that scour the internet looking for vulnerable WordPress installations.
Once a website is hacked a number of things can happen. Your website can begin to load very slowly as the virus eats up your server's processing power and your website could become entirely inaccessible. Malware scripts can also generate fake content on your website which can destroy your rank and reputation with Google.
